This distinctive vest’s elegant long lines were suggested by a rich, circa 1880's scrapbag quilt top. So many of the lovely pieced blocks were resistant to obediently laying flat that a garment featuring this overall pattern alone was out of the question. Instead, Joanne selected long segments that feature the best of the quilt and built a garment that would showcase them while emphasizing a wearer's own long lines and womanly curves.
Working with a lush coffee brown wool crepe, she composed a striking garment that could flatteringly hug hourglass curves before opening to the wearer’s choice of complements: a fitted top with a flowing skirt or trim slacks. The lanky shape proves a sultry over-garment with grownup sophistication and decorum.
The exquisite tailored details include spacious, but discreet, hip-slung pockets, flattering internal shoulder pads and saucy little shoulder flaps, tiny hidden weights in the hemline to ensure the garment hangs crisply, a lively mocha-print piping that runs down the vest in long, slimming lines and the pared-down front placket that showcases the few necessary buttons but leaves the garment open and vented for easy movement.
This piece takes the sumptuous tones of a long-ago quilt top and transforms them into the featured elements in a dressy, dramatic, one-of-a-kind statement of authority and taste.
